Salaah (Prayer)
- Salaah is one of the 5 pillars of our faith
- We are commanded to perform salaah at 5 prescribed times of the day:
fajr (just before sunrise), zuhr (just after noon), 'asr (mid-afternoon),
maghrib (just after sunset) and 'ishaa (at night)
- Benefits of Salaah
- Salaah is an expression of our obedience to Allah.
- Salaah is the best link between the believer and Allah.
- All Prophets did perform some form of prayer. Prophet Muhammad,
while on mi'raaj, was instructed to command Muslims to pray. We
perform prayer according to the manner in which the Prophet prayed.
- Places of worship (masjid / mosque) serve as religious and
social centers for Muslims because Muslims meet and make salaah there.
- If we make salaah at the mosque we identify ourselves with the rest
of the Muslim community.
- Praying in jama'ah (congregation) reminds us that we are part
of a worldwide family of believers. When we perform salaah together we
display our unity.
- Salaah reminds us that we are all brothers and sisters in faith and
equal in the estimation of Allah as we stand shoulder to shoulder without
any distinction of color, rank, wealth, nationality or culture.
- Muslims all over the world pray in the same manner, in the same language
and towards the same Ka'bah in Makkah, which is our qiblah (direction of prayer).
- We have to perform wudu (ablution) before salaah and this teaches
us the importance of cleanliness.
- We make salaah at particular times every day and this teaches us punctuality
as well as to value time.
- We bow to Allah in salaah and this teaches us humility.
- Salaah keeps us away from evil.
